All The Tools You Need

Published on May 14th, 2010

Designed and coded by ‘our very own’ Grammy Award winning engineer, Tony David Cray, AudioToolkit is an iPhone application offering a compendium of tools for audio and music industry professionals. Tony developed the application based on session requirements at the Sydney Opera House recording studios – where he’s Chief Engineer.

So far the tools include:

Media: for calculating media space required for your chosen recording format and track count. For the extreme high-res recordists this even includes calculations for DSD.
Tempo: provides an über-accurate realtime synthesis metronome (way more accurate than the iPhone OS-based timekeeping), with display of musical tempo names and user-selectable bar length, and rhythm.
Pitch: bundles an oscillator, tuner, and pitch detection section, while displaying pitch as notes on a stave, Hertz, or MIDI note numbers. It’s designed to work out the pitch of a lumpy bass, or find that infernal ringing in the vocalist’s monitor wedge.
Time: calculates time delay in seconds, distance (with offsets for temperature), and samples (based on sample rate).
Phase: measures the phase of a signal based on either a generated click or a pre-recorded audio file. Just point the iPhone speaker onto the mic being tested. Then, with another iPhone in your control room you can determine whether the wiring is in phase.
AudioToolkit requires iPhone OS 3.0 or greater. At present the app isn’t compatible with iPod Touch, but version 1.1 will be. More modules for the kit are in development.
