I loved reading this article. Being both an avid gamer and audio enthusiast almost in equal measures I could appreciate what was covered in the article. Although Battlefield is probably not as big sales wise as Modern Warefare 3, the latest offering from the Call of Duty franchise, I can say that it certainly delivers much more in terms of sound. I usually play in my studio, which is treated and has a decent set of monitors. On a side note, I found a use for my Rode NT 1A, its my dedicated gaming mic! Anyway its either through the monitors with sub, or through my Senheizer HD 600's. My point being that when the sound on a game is right, in the right listening environment the effect on overall playability cannot be understated. In multiplayer mode when playing over the internet it is indispensable for a good result particularly in a first person shooter style game. You can hear your enemies footsteps or which direction you are taking fire from etc and make your moves accordingly. And who doesn't love the sound of a shot ringing out and the spent casing being expelled and subsequently hitting the ground. I know who.doesn't, my Mrs. Thats when the HD600's come into their own. They are an open design so I have to crank the headphone amp to get over the whinging but hey I have the technology. An interesting part of the article for me was regarding dialogue, which is traditionally the hard part to get right in games. Anyway a great article, a great game and I would love to see more articles on gaming audio in the mag.

I found it of interest too but I'm a computer nerd at heart.
One thing I will say (Leigh).............that green type on the textured background was damned hard to read in poor light!
(mainly the Levine article)

In the olden days.............before geeks were popular and had no female companionship............

It had to be loud enough to mask the noise of the case fans!!!

Haha, that's an epic case.

I also have to agree on the article. I also have to admit that I'm a bit of a BF3 fan. I guess 300 hours into the game says something about that. The sound in the game is absolutely awesome. The dynamic mixing (HDR Audio) works well most of the time. In the last patch, the footsteps became less defined and harder to tell their direction but it's a minor problem.

I play it with a Logitech X-530 surround system with the War Tapes audio mode. I don't like to play with headphones because I lose surround, and I find that I play worse.

@LogicProbe - Take a look at Gamasutra. They have plenty of articles about sound for video games. Here's a link to one that I read a little while ago. http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/1726 ... undrum.php
One of the great things about the site is that most of the audio articles are written by the people that are making the sound and gives a nice insight into their thought processes.

Check Crysis for some great sound too. Not so much Crysis 2, but 1 and Warhead had some good sound. Spent a little while modding that game and playing with the sound system.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It's good to hear that game audio interests our readers. It's a fascinating area. And John Broomhall is a great correspondent. Is it more of an appreciation, or would anyone out there be interested to learn more about how they use the more specific tools of the trade?

I think for me it's a bit of both having worked on a few mods. Game audio is the dream job for me, but I fall too easily into the 'needs experience for job, needs job for experience' category.

By leaving articles like this only to games that have incredible sound, or are doing something different we shouldn't bore people that have no interest in it, and it will be all the better when it comes along. Just my opinion though.
