A Soft 480L

For over two decades, the Lexicon 480L Digital Effects System has been the standard by which other reverb processors are measured. The Lexicon 480L is still a first choice in pretty much any studio that’s fortunate enough to own one of these beasts.

The crafty coders at Relab Development have decided to create an accurate emulation of this legendary reverb. Apart from faithful recreation of the Lexicon 480L, the LX480 plug-in includes modelled input and output stages, including everything from internal clipping through to quirks in the feedback loops, along with additional features and functions not found on the original such as more ER delay lines, stereo manipulation. The LX480 Lite consists of the Random Hall and the Random Hall HD from the upcoming LX480 MK2 plugin. Lite is available for purchase now, and allows for an upgrade to the MK2 when it becomes available. The plug-in is compatible with Mac OS X (10.5 or higher), Windows XP or higher. Mac requires an Intel processor and Windows requires a PIII or higher. VST or AudioUnit compatibility, and an iLok USB key is required. See Relab Development’s site for a demo or to purchase www.relab.dk

Waves make waves

While this litigation was tabled in the United States, it’s worth considering the repercussions if you happen to be hiding a few illegitimate plug-ins amongst your DAW processing arsenal. Two recent cases highlight Waves’s right to protect its software products from illegal ‘cracking’ and use.
During May, Waves Audio, the company that makes all those plug-ins we like to use, won a lawsuit and had a defendant admit liability in another regarding intellectual property infringements and the illegal use of Waves software. The two studios were New York City-based Skyline Recording Studios, and Quad Recording Studios.

DPA 4099 for bass and cello

During 2008, DPA Microphones unveiled the 4099 clip microphone range. The range has now been expanded with two further additions: the 4099B and 4099C, with mounting accessories designed specifically for bass and cello respectively.

One of the areas sound quality and high rejection become an issue is with acoustic bass, so a new holder has been designed. Bass players such as Chris Minh Doky were already 4099 users before the launch of the new bass clip. In fact, Minh Doky was so confident he’d found the ultimate mic that he drilled a hole into his instrument’s bridge for a permanent mounting solution. With the new clip design, such drastic measures are clearly no longer necessary.

Tiny interface from MOTU

MOTU has just announced the MicroBook, a USB bus-powered audio interface delivering studio-grade audio performance in a unit small enough to literally fit in your pocket.
The MicroBook provides four pairs of outputs: balanced TRS quarter-inch main outs, a stereo ‘mini’ line out, S/PDIF out, and headphones. With its internal mixing and routing features, the MicroBook lets users program up to five different stereo mixes consisting of any combination of inputs and host audio tracks. So the main outs, stereo ‘mini’ out, and phones output can each produce an independent mix. The S/PDIF digital output mirrors the main outs.
