AT73 Out Now

Published on March 17th, 2010

This issue AT checks out AC/DC’s Black Ice tour, Andy Stewart investigates Guy Sebastian’s recording digs, and Mark Woods gives us his first-hand account of what it’s like to mix a bluegrass festival at the Harrietville Bluegrass Convention.

AT readers have been mixing up a storm with the ‘Mute or Moot’ multitrack file from Issue 70, and some have let us know how they got on in MIXING IN A VACUUM.

We look at mastering protocols in PREPARING FOR MASTERING and Stav offers some tips on finalising decisions under pressure, while Rob Squire repairs an old Neve console and gives us a reality check about buying cheap, large-format consoles.

Reviews include Presonus’s Studio One Pro DAW, the Allen & Heath iLIVE-T 112 Digital Console System, Novation’s Launchpad controller, the GML 2032 Analogue preamp/EQ combo, the Livid Instruments OHM64 Controller and TC Electronic’s Impact Twin Audio Interface.

Very cool reading about Guy Sebastian this month in AT!

Ridiculously talented in the vocal department as well as being a multiple instrumentalist – I have no idea why anyone would want to hate on him except for the tall poppy syndrome, of which us Aussies are so good at!

An intelligent style of interview there Andy Stewart – I learnt lots of stuff about Sebastian that I didnt know – he is a gear junkie and knows his stuff and has applied it to making a business out of it by setting up a studio, which I have to say, looks and sounds amazing!

Thanks Babe, glad you liked it.

Thanks Andy for the wonderful and intelligent interview, as Babe said we are learning more about Mr Sebastian. I hope we will be reading more topics about Guy in the future. But then again why should I be surprised, as he is one of Australia’s best male singer/songwriters. The pictures of his studio is just gorgeous …Well done Guy !!!
    Thanks again Andy.

Thanks so much for putting the Guy Sebastian interview on your website now. I had been so frustrated at finding the mag sold out everywhere I tried.
While I don’t understand all the technical jargon, I’m so pleased to see Guy being treated with respect in an interview, and as a fan, happy to see that others can now see the side of him that we know.
We have always known the stories about his part-time jobs he had to get the money for his home studios. Even while doing the radiation technology course at University for 3 years before Idol, he worked part time in a warehouse, cleaned toilets in nursing homes, taught singing at schools. He deserves every bit of success he’s achieved, because he’s worked damned hard for it !

For half the country, heaping crap on Guy does seem to be the national sport, doesn’t it? Glad you went for it, Andy. Even today it’s not unusual to read a Guy interview in which he’s still asked why he cut his fro, so I’m pleased you ignored the warnings and invited Guy to talk about something that really interests him.

And anyone who can do a live gig in the US and have both Steve Cropper and David Ryan Harris step on stage behind him, together, is growing some real respect in the industry. Perhaps soon it won’t matter what Australia thinks.

I really enjoyed your interview and learned so much more about Guy. You managed to bring so much out of him. He must have been over the moon to be able to discuss his favourite techno stuff with someone like you. Thanks so much Andy.
That said, it saddens me that people are so prejudiced and closed minded about Guy in Australia that you felt you had to introduce your article with what seemed like an apology. And you are right implying that some people wouldn’t like a Guy song simply because it’s him. He doesn’t get the same lousy treatment overseas – only much deserved respect from people who themselves have huge respect, same here with musicians who have worked with him and know his worth.
He’s a truly remarkable, ubertalented (according to David Ryan Harris) and courageous person.

Thankyou for putting the super talented Mr Sebastian article online. I am unable to find your magazine in New Zealand. Borders & Mag Nation in Auckland
don’t have it. Great interview and photos. I especially like the one of Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book album brings back for me, awesome memories of when Guy got that record.

    Awesome interview Andy @AT ♡ ♥

I’m sending a copy to my uncle who is a non believer because of the Idol stigma – thank you so much for providing hard copy cred and deserved respect for Guy as the true musician, artist and studio engineer that he is ♫

I dont understand some of the technical jargon in the interview but my producer uncle will :) YES!!!
