Bakehouse Recording Studios was established in 1991, when Quincy McLean was in need of a rehearsal space for his then band Blue Ruin. The old York Street Studios were up for lease so a makeshift rehearsal room was quickly set up in the old bakery at Bakehouse Lane in North Fitzroy. It took another three years before it would be re-established as a recording studio. The Bakehouse Rehearsal Studios kicked off during the late 90s in an old furniture storage building in Hoddle Street, Richmond. Its a rambling old affair that oozes authenticity and kitchy charm.

The rooms are large and enigmatic, with old-school Yamaha EMX analogue mixing consoles installed throughout the establishment. Rehearsal rooms number nine in total, and are all named rather than numbered. The courtyard offers a delightful atmosphere for chilling out, or indeed for an impromptu performance on the outdoor areas stage, and full kitchen facilities are available including tea and fresh coffee, biscuits, snacks, a microwave, and a large fridge.

The Bakehouse also offers proximity to public transport, with a bus-stop outside the door and a 100m walk to Richmond train station. The rehearsal spaces enjoy some honoured patrons, the likes of which include Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, The Saints, Evan Dando of Lemonheads fame, Paul Kelly, The Dirty Three, John Butler Trio, The Cat Empire, Augie March, The Drones, Little Birdy, The Panics, X, Steve Kilby & The Triffids, The Beasts of Bourbon, The Scientists, Dave Graney, Dallas Crane, Cut Copy, and Beth Orton. The list really does go on and on.
